History

FROM THE PAST

When the Mississippi Jook Band recorded in a Hattiesburg hotel in 1936, it planted the "roots of rock and roll" in the city. The Mississippi Jook Band was short-lived, but the recordings, the musicians, and the music that echoed across Mississippi lived on.

The Juke is a nod to music history, housed in a set of historic buildings that have witnessed many eras in downtown Hattiesburg. The original facade and brick walls hold the stories of the past as we create new ones in the present.

Hospitality with a Vision

Our founder, Morrisa's dedication to creating spaces that nurture wellbeing and cultural appreciation began in her hometown of Laurel, Mississippi, where visits to a local African bookstore and Sunday gatherings with family were rich with music, storytelling, culture, and community. In 2019, she founded Freedom Apothecary — a skincare and lifestyle brand rooted in the belief that self-care is both radical and necessary to survive and thrive. Through it, she cultivated a community and created experiences that invited people to slow down, reconnect, and care for themselves wholly. Now, she brings that same vision to The Juke — a soulful extension of her passion for dynamic spaces that foster freedom, joy, rest, and wellness.
